Update: Not so recent photographs
I added some old photographs to my website this weekend. Two self portraits and a scene of ThanksVegan Dinner from 2008. Hope they are still worthy of being on there. I like them quite a bit.
Friday the 13th Skateboard Post
Friday the 13th a couple of videos came out online. Andrew Reynolds is now on Spitfire and had a nice little part come out of park footage and some street stuff. He is always blowing people away. 32 years old and still going strong and keeps doing new things that even his friends get surprised by as you will see.
Spitfire Welcomes Andrew Reynolds from dlxsf on Vimeo.
Thrasher also put out a part for Habitat rider Mark Suciu. Im not really sure where this kid came from but so good. Some great tricks and nice style. Lots of east coast stuff including a big banger in Philadelphia. He is going to be the new name to know for sure. BS Noseblunt up against a wall. Crazy. Enjoy it.
My Top Ten Comics/Arcs of 2011
2011, My first full year reading and collecting comics. I decided to make a top ten / recommended reading list from the past year of some of my favorites. Hopefully I can convince some people to actually read some stuff, so read the list make some decisions of your own and go to your shop and pick some issues or trades up and enjoy reading some masterpieces.
10: X-Men: First to Last – X-Men Giant Size #1, X-Men #12 – #15
The X-Men of today and the Original X-Men go up against The Evolutionaries. A group of beings that decide when a species has had its time and the world is ready for the next superior species to take over. The original X-Men are pitted against them and convince them that the Humans are not done for and though having no memory of it in the future the Evolutionaries agree to let them try thanks to Scott. Now in the present day the Evolutionaries are back and the X-Men must stop them from destroying Humanity. They will decide who can lead the new Homo Superior and destroy the humans. The best arc of X-Men I read this year and have since given up on the series for now because it has just gotten to big and the X-Men title just wasn’t doing it for me. This one however was a great read and I looked forward to hit coming out each month.
9: Fear Itself
Matt Fractions epic crossover was a hit. Hammer wielding monsters, death and destruction at every turn. This one had all of it with some major story points and amazing art. Changing the Marvel Universe in big ways. The 7 book arc is a must read along with some of the crossover side issues. Marvel is sure to blow everyone away with the 2012 crossover as well, Avengers Vs X-Men.
8: Death of Spider-Man (Ultimate Universe)
Brian Michael Bendis, the mastermind of the Ultimate Universe, does something unthinkable and kills Peter Parker. Even though I have not followed the Ultimate Universe and this was the first thing I read, seeing Peter Parker die is tragic. He is still a high school student and trying to be part of the Avengers and the other adults. He doesn’t just die either. He dies being a hero after being shot.
7: Avenging Spider-Man (New Ongoing Series)
After a few years of having Amazing Spider-Man be the only Spidey title, the web heads decided to add Avenging Spider-Man to the table. Its been a busy year for Spider-Man, between being on the Avengers and the FF and have his own problems to deal with this fantastic new series fills in some of the gaps and has Spider-Man teaming up with some of his teammates and short arcs. The first being with the Red Hulk facing some Mole People though a bigger villan is behind it. Look forward to some more team ups, the next being with Hawk Eye.
6: Fantastic Four #587 / #600
A year between the two issues, with the issues in between being FF. Jonathan Hickman kills Johnny Storm and brings him back but it is in grand style and fills you with emotion. With two on going series this year I look forward to seeing where he goes with it.
5: Carnage U.S.A. (New Ongoing Series)
Carnage is back. Taking over small towns in middle America and beating up Avengers and being Carnage. The first issue of this 5 issue limited series came out at the end of December and promises to be a well worth reading. If Zeb Wells and Clayton Crain have come up with anything as good as last years Carnage mini-series then we are in for a whopper of a story.
4: Batman: Court of Owls – Batman #1 – #4 (New 52 – Continuing into 2012)
The stand out of the DC New 52 for me, though I did not give everything a chance, but I have been following most of the different Batman series (Batman, Batman & Robin, Batman: The Dark Knight, Nightwing, Detective Comics) and Action Comics. The various Batman series have been great. It was nice getting them all in a fresh place. Action is alright but sometimes I have trouble with the gaps in Grant Morrison’s style of writing. Batman by Scott Snyder though stands out. Gotham has been secretly run by The Court of Owls for centuries and Batman getting close to them releases The Talon. Though I follow all the Batman Series, this is one that I really look forward too.
3: Spider-Island
In Dan Slott’s epic masterpiece, New York City is invested with bed bugs that produce spider powers. The entire story comprises of 28 issues. The main story being The Amazing Spider-Man #666-673. With side storys in Venom #6-8, Spider Island: Cloak and Dagger #1-3, Spider-Island: Deadly Hands of Kung Fu #1-3, Spider-Island: Spider-Girl #1-3, Black Panther #524, Herc #7-8, Spider-Island: Deadly Foes, Spider-Island: Avengers, Spider-Island: Spider-Woman, Spider-Island: I Love New York, and Spider-Island: Heroes for Hire. The main story is amazing with so much plot and twist, along with Venoms part. I would say Cloak and Dagger, Deadly Foes, and Spider-Girl are the top stand outs from the rest though reading the entire collection is recommended. The main story in ASM features everyone from the other issues though focused around Peter Parker, Mary Jane and Carlie. With a great cast of enemies, a mutated Captain America fighting Venom, a mutated Kane, The Jackel, The Queen, Shocker and the Mayor turning into spider monsters along with all the other New Yorkers. This was a big one and leads us into the new year with Venom on the run, a new Scarlett Spider and a break up between Peter and Carlie.
2: The Avengers #14 / #16
In what I consider the two best written comics I read this year, Brian Michael Bendis, in this very unique style of interviews and flash backs, leads us through some of the events of Fear Itself as seen by The Avengers. #14 sees the destruction of Avengers Tower and the disappearance of The Red Hulk with an amazing battle by John Romita Jr. between The Hammer Wielding Thing and Red Hulk. #16 we see Steve Rodgers going after Sin, and in the final page taking up his role as Captain America and apologizing for Bucky Barnes death.
1: The Amazing Spider-Man #655
A book of almost complete silence though not with out series mastermind Dan Slott. The best cover of the year by Marcos Martin and also one of the most amazing spreads that goes through the entire history of the wall crawler. Dedicated to the death of Marla Jameson and Peter declares that from then on, as long as he is around, No One Dies.
New Portraits for the New Year
Added some new portraits to my website today. Nate Benson, Matt Dunn, and Thad Jackson. Nate, Matt and I went around the city a few weeks back when Nate was down to visit. It was a beautiful day I had to take some photographs. Thad was kind enough to pose for me in Year of the Dragon, the shop he works at in Downtown Auburn NY. He is up and coming so stop in there and see him. You can see these and my other portraits here.
